Ants in the house are the dread of many people in summer months leaving many people to fear the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will herald

Only the unluck people who have suffered it will appreciate the true effects of flying ants in their own homes.

Having an infestation of ordinary wingless ants is bad enough but when they enter their annual mating phase the position can become dreadful.

Ants often form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our buildings and these colonies will survive for many years if left untreated becoming progressively more annoying every year.

Our homes are warm and dry and make the ideal places for a growing ant colony; even solid concrete floor is not a deterent to and ant colony.

Our central heating systems maintains their metabolism even in winter and my earliest ant call-out was on my birthday, in January!

Ants like a sandy soil and there are plenty areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant problems than others, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant spots.

Unfortunately it is during their mating phase that they are most irksome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this tends to be pretty often around the third or fourth week in July.

Ants mate in flight and sometime around mid-summer the colony releases winged immature Queens and flying males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst flying. Many thousands of these flying ants are released per colony and nests tend to time their production so that they mate with ants from other nearby.

Often this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will typically last for about acouple of weeks although smaller releases will carry on throughout most of the summer months.

Unfortunately when the nest is built under the floor of the house the results can be horrifying, literally thousands of winged ants are released into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they go towards the light.

This can be very distressing for some people leading to severe emotional upset to the extent that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually sold their homes to escape the plague of ants which they know comes each summer.

The wet summers of 2007, 2008 & 2009 has meant that ant infestations were down on earlier but ants appear to have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly good year for them.

Most people who have this problem attempt for DIY solutions with potions from DIY outlets etc but mostly these efforts are doomed to failure as they are not getting to the heart of the problem which is the nest itself, hidden away safely in the cavity wall or sub-floor area.

Fortunately for many people help.

At Harrier Pest Prevention (subject to local site) we are able to remedy this problem and give an extendable three year guarantee.

The process which is carried out mostly from the outside of the home, is totally safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the building, not unlike a damp-course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.

This forms an uncrossable barrier over which the ants cannot move and along with a precautionary internal spray treatment (if deemed necessary) will slowly bring the ant colony under control.

The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter are left open so it is an easy matter of topping up the wall cavities every 3 to extend the period of the guarantee in 3 year periods.

This treatment is best carried out in the early spring however it can be done at any time of year.

As a strictly limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the usual cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we usually cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are willing to travel further afield but this will be at extra cost.
